PROGRAMME AIMS
The aims of the programme are to:
- Offer students a range of opportunities to be certified to operate as Safety
Engineers or Specialists in the industrial environment - Provide up-to-date professional training and education in the OSH & EM Acts
and Safety. - Produce a cadre of trained professionals who will inspect, audit, analyse and
advise management on how to develop and maintain a safe culture. - Offer a route to students to advance their qualifications in SAFETY (safety,
health and environment) management.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the programme graduates will be able to::
- Communicate effectively on health and safety matters
Engineers or Specialists in the industrial environment - Prepare reports on health and safety matters.
- Advise on health and safety matters
- Lead in the development , review and monitoring of safety policy and procedures
- Apply knowledge of health and safety regulations including international conventions such as ISO and ILO
- Identify risks and hazards in the workplace and advise on appropriate solutions
- Analyse the various Safety Management Systems
- Advise management on safety culture development
- Assess training needs for their organisations
- Advise management on accident prevention
A) ENGINEERING STREAM
Graduates of the Engineering Stream will:
- Function as Safety Engineers
– Prepare reports on health, safety and environment issues
– Conduct incident investigations
– Prepare incident statistical data
– Conduct Quality and Safety Audits
– Implement and Review the company’s Safety Management System
– Conduct Job Hazard Analysis
– Conduct Risk Assessments
– Function as per their discipline
- Read and Interpret P & IDs and Process drawings
- Read and Interpret Construction Drawings
- Read and Interpret Factory and equipment drawings
– Develop and conduct training programmes
– Develop strategies to prevent accidents in the workplace
B) GENERAL STREAM

SAFETY ENGINEERING
Entry Requirements for this programme is
- 2 A Levels or 4 units of CAPE in Maths and a Science (Physics, Chemistry or Biology) with O Levels (Maths, English and Science)
- Mature Students with combination of maths /science education and industrial experience in
safety, health & environment will be admitted at the discretion of the Institution. (Entrance
Exam etc.)
GENERAL SAFETY
Entry Requirements for this programme is
- 2 A Levels or 4 units of CAPE in Maths, Geography or Economics) with 5 O levels (Maths,
English and Science) - SRG Diploma
- 5 O Levels with Technician’s Diploma
- COSTATT Associate Degree in Occupational Safety & Health – Maths & Science requirements for this level, Exemptions from some courses in year 1 for Associate Degree
- CIPRANI Associate Degree in Occupational Safety & Health – the Maths & Science
- requirements for this level, Exemptions from some courses in year 1 for Associate Degree
- NEBOSH Diploma – Maths & Science requirements for this level, Exemptions from some courses in year 1
- BSc. Degrees – Exemptions from Year 1 subject to the programme requirements
